This site includes several great resources regarding student rights.  It includes the top ten most frequently asked questions about student rights.  There is also a section with news flashes containing new articles related to the individual rights of students.  These issues are essential in assessing the existence or non-existence of in loco parentis.

Relevant reports include the Violent Victimization of College Students, Sexual Victimization of College Women, Campus Law Enforcement, and Indicators of School Crime and Safety.

College Drinking: Changing the Culture - www.collegedrinkingprevention.gov

This government site has continual updates on new visions and policies to prevent underage drinking on college campuses.  Many colleges’ policies go beyond the state and federal law to prevent drinking.  Some universities take on a more parental role in exceeding the law for, what they believe is, the student’s betterment.

Sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences of the U.S. Department of Education, ERIC is an online digital library of electronic research and information. This full-text database is chopped full of education-related literature.

 This site from the Dept. of Education looks at different programs used in higher education to prevent the use of drugs and alcohol on college campuses.

National Institutes of Health - http://www.nih.gov/

NIH is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. The NIH website provides one of the most powerful and accurate search engines for finding journal articles and publications of recent medical research findings. Information on college drinking and internet abuse was found utilizing this source.

The U.S. Department of Education - www.ed.gov

The “U.S. Department of Education” website is the most comprehensive of all sites dealing with education policy.  This is a government site discussing providing detailed descriptions of policies and visions from elementary schools through college universities.

The Chronicle of Higher Education – www.chronicle.com

The Chronicle describes itself as the No. 1 source of news, information, and jobs for college and university faculty members and administrators. Definitely the most recognizable publication on college campuses, the Chronicle is an excellent source for contemporary issues related to and affecting higher education with 42 issues published annually.

 This site looks at helicopter parents and acknowledges the problems with these parental behaviors. They suggest several methods for how parents can stay involved in a beneficial way without being a helicopter parent, attempting to make the transition from home to college as easy as possible.

The sport journal contains breaking stories about college athletics and the issues that surround them.  Several of the articles are about alcohol abuse, physical health, emotional health, coaching and leadership.

This site is devoted to discussing the future of higher education.  It includes breaking news, events, and ideas that will shape the future of higher education.  In loco parentis was very prominent in the past.  Many schools have moved away from this model, although there are still a few that adhere to the idea.  It is uncertain to say if more schools will move away from this model or if more will move back towards it.  This site tracks the factors that will shape which direction we go.

This site contains news about up-to-date alcohol policy.  It tracks new policies as well as responses and discussion about these policies.   These policies and responses to policies are closely linked to how close universities adhere to an idea of in loco parentis.

This specific page covers the problem of acquaintance rape on college campuses and provides insights to those incidents and those involved in the problem. It can serve as a guide for understanding Rape on a college campus.

The center for science in the public interest looks at all kinds of issues related to alcohol issues on a college campus, including this one on alcohol policy in their examination of binge drinking. It identifies it as a problem and its effects especially in college.

“College Parents of America” has cutting-edge news about issues affecting the parents of college students.  These issues include, but are not limited to, FERPA, responsibilities of universities and the rights of parents.  This site primarily looks at the role of the parents versus the role of the university.

Educating to Eliminate Hazing - www.stophazing.org

Hazing is a constant problem at universities, especially amongst fraternities and sororities.  This site tracks up-to-date instances of hazing.  There are also updates about new ideas and policies to reduce hazing on campus.  This brings up questions of how much rights the individual has and how much right the university and its leaders have to step in.

An organization focused on developing the intelligent use of information technologies among universities, Educause publishes electronic articles and resources relevant to the legal implications of computer use on college campuses.

This organization reports the large number of women sexually harassed on college campuses. They offer descriptions of security and law enforcement policies, crime prevention activities on a college campus.

F.I.R.E stands for “Foundation for Individual Rights in Education”.  The entire site looks at what rights an individual has at a university.  The question of in loco parentis is a tension between university rights and personal rights.  This site contains up to date information about the individual rights which, in turn, affect the university’s rights.

This site is called “The Human Rights Education Associates”.  It discusses issues of human rights.  These issues are essentially related to college campus policies and the idea of in loco parentis.  University rights are held in close tension with individual human rights.  The one affects the other.
